I have a desktop and laptop, both with windows xp. I wish to copy and keep
updated the files from the desktop to the laptop.
I have copied them from the desktop to an external hard drive and from there
to the laptop but this is quite time consuming.
If I use briefcase then how do I keep it updated; I have it on the external
hard drive but it does not seem to match the files on the desktop, it
certainly does not delete the files that I have deleted in the desktop. Can
anyone give me advice?
Would it be better to link the 2 computers with the ethernet cable and try
to do a direct transfer and later match of the folders?
Thank you.

Create the briefcase on the external drive, drag the files you want to
keep updated into it. When the original files change the copies in the
briefcase are updated (or you select update manually) - the upto date or
needs updated status will show - I have tested and it works as you
need.....I reckon that you aren't updating (goto briefcase --> update)
It may be that I am not giving it enough time, I do see the update menu and
it seems to apply to virtually every folder even although many of them have
not been changed. I have it on the external drive as you said.
I shall keep trying

Do you have an option for an *incremental* update ?

I have opened it up again but cannot find any option for an "incremental"
update.
Even if I click to update all it does not seem to do so and if I look at the
small window that comes up I have to consider right clicking each item to
replace, skip or delete - that is far too time consuming.
In the desktop computer I have 10032 files and 739 folders in "My Documents"
yet despite having run briefcase several times (in the external hard drive)
it contains only 9804 files and 735 folders.
I have little confidence in it and think again that I may be better linking
the desktop computera to the laptop with a firewire, ethernet or usb cable
and trying to match the files that way.
Thanks again
