Default write protection??!!

re: hp pavillion a1740n
"a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your comp. check for viruses on your computer. ***stop: 0x0000007b, 0xf78d2524, oxc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

displays this blue screen when trying to install winxp. boot from cdrom. fresh install. tried to format from both by winxp & win2k disk. same error. f6 to install raid drivers, but bypassed by using the ide bus instead. used a new ide drive, so it must be a virus protection on the cpu/flash. but there is nothing to write to but the hd(formatted). i am very confused at this point. any help???

ps
i've successfully downgraded from vista to xp on a toshiba satellite notebook. using driver magician v3.16, was able to find working xp drivers (nic drivers) that was not offered by toshiba support.
