Default Windows Update and nVidia GeForce drivers

Windows Update insists on installing the older 162.22 drivers
for the nVidia GeForce 6150LE integrated grafics adapter even if the
user has installed the newer 163.69 or 163.75 drivers.

It was OK that Windows Update downloaded the 162.22 nVidia
drivers as an optional update the 4.september, one day after I had installed
Vista on my HP Pavilion computer.

Later I downloaded the newer Forceware 163.69 drivers from the nVidia
web site an installed them. But Windows Update downloaded the 162.22
drivers as an optional update. I installed it and only afterwards realised
that it was older than the driver from the nVidia website.

A few days ago I downloaded the 163.75 drivers from nVidia web site. The
next
day Windows Update wanted to reinstal the 162.22 drivers, this time as an
important
update. I had to hide the update to prevent it from installing.

Why is Windows Update installing older drivers? And why was the update not
optional
in the latter case?

If you look on the NVidia site they suggest that you always remove old
drivers and reboot before trying to install new ones which you have
already downloaded and saved in a handy place. This means that using
Windows update is really not the best option anyway. I can sort of see
Microsoft's point of view that installing drivers like this is better
than having old broken ones that came with the system originally but
think they could at least advise in the text to look elsewhere.

I saw it and hid it, it didn't appear for me as important though if I
recall - not sure however...

Because 162.22 is stable and the latest ones you quoted are still beta vs.
As you say just hide the 162.22 update if you are happy using beta

Beg your pardon sir, of course it's the 169.12 which is beta the 163.75 is
not.
I've been using the 169.12 for a while now and all seems fine.
Good luck.
