Default Windows Update "Error Code: 80070003"

After performing what I thought would be a routine Windows update last
night, I found that none of the patches the update service said it had
installed were actually completed.

Update history showed the same code for each failure -
Error code: 80070003

I went into the Help files and followed these instructions:

Disable the Windows Update Service, which I did,
DEL *.* in the following dirs:
/Windows/ SoftwareDistribution/DataStore &
/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download, which I also did.

I restarted the Update Service, rebooted and tried, and tried, and tried
again, but alas: Error Code: 80070003.

Any ideas, suggestions, good hammers?

Regards,

Go to the Microsoft website. there is a link (I think under support) where
you can submit a ticket for free help with upgrades. I've used them twice
and was very satisfied. There is also a link on the screen where you receive
the error-try clicking on that as well.
