Default Windows Firewall

Hi There,
I have been reading a lot about the conflicts that Norton can cause with
Vista. My laptop came with a 60 day free trial that came pre-installed.

After reading the problems it can cause I uninstalled it in favour of AVG
free which I run on my desktop PC. Since doing that whenever I turn off my
laptop or shut the lid to go into sleep mode when I restart it my firewall
is off and I have to turn it back on. In the security centre it says that 2
firewalls can cause conflicts which would suggest that I have got one in
place which I have not as Norton has been uninstalled and I used the Norton
removal tool to clear it away.

Is there anyway to stop it from turning off?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions and advice.

Simon Stacey.

It sounds to me that Norton didn't completely remove itself, even with
the removal tool - no surprise there. You may want to try a registry
cleaner. The following are good ones and relatively safe:

'jv16 PowerTools' (http://www.macecraft.com/)

'CCleaner' (http://www.ccleaner.com/)

Run the norton removal tool at least twice if not three times.

Hi Peter
Thanks for the reply
I had already run the removal tool twice but tried a further 2 times and
then the registry cleaner as suggested by Koch when I restarted the Laptop
the same problem again.

Any other suggestions gratefully received

Simon

koch is a moron, you should NEVER use a registry cleaner. Don't take my word
for it. Search this newsgroup for comments by MVPs regarding registry
cleaners.

1. Try to run the removal tool in 'safe mode'.
2. Try Absolute Uninstaller and Revo Uninstaller

1. Try to run the removal tool in 'safe mode'.
2. If the Norton removal tool doesn't work satisfactory use this:
Revo Uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
and/or
Absolute Uninstaller
http://www.glarysoft.com/au.html
and/or
RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker will remove all associated detritus (registry keys, files and
folders) from any application. I found this application user friendly and
very effective but suggest *not* to use the 'Clean the Registry' option.
Click onto 'Find in registry' and in the 'Search for' box type *Norton*;
The pertinent registry keys can then be safely deleted (just in case,
ensure that the 'Backup before deletion' is checked). Repeat the task by
typing in the Search for' box *Symantec*. You can then go on search and
remove associated files as well.
Then use NTREGOPT to compact the registry; Follow instructions.
