Default windows explorer error

everytime i try to open something that uses windows explorer, such as control
panel, display properties, etc. a few seconds after it pops up i get another
pop up window saying something like "Windows Explorer has stopped
functioning...looking for a solution to the problem" then it says "Restarting
Windows Explorer" and then all the windows close and the start menu goes
away. when it comes back up, it still does the exact same thing. it's also
telling me i might not have the right security updates, which is probably
true, because i just upgraded from XP. but, i can't open windows update
because that uses windows explorer and it just restarts. can somebody please
help me?

A number of things might cause that during an upgrade, depending on how you
did it.
You do not have access to folders or to files after you upgrade the computer
to Windows Vista:

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system
configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista:

What's the fault information for that crash according to the Problem Reports
and Solutions Center control panel?
