Default Windows Easy Transfer XP Not Responding

I have an old XP Home laptop and am trying to transfer files and settings to
a new Vista laptop running Vista Home Premium. When I try to run Windows
Easy Transfer on the XP computer it always "freezes" (Not Responding) after I
click any option (either "Next" button; or the two links to information) on
the "Welcome to Windows Easy Transfer screen. The computer is up to date on
updates. I have disabled my antivirus and security programs. I was able to
run the Windows Easy Transfer Companion -- and at first thought I had
transfered settings and files, but obviously only some programs transfered.
I was using a Belkin transfer cable (obviously it was successfully installed,
since it worked with the Companion program), but am willing to try other
methods (cd/dvd, external hard drive, network -- anything!).
What can I do to either get past that screen without locking up or transfer
files and settings without using Windows Easy Transfer?
