In the advanced settings of Power Options, for your "Plan", you can change
the default under "Power buttons ..." > "Start Menu power button".

Hi Haydon,
Vista changed the way sleep mode works. It's now a hybrid sleep.
It'll go to sleep, then after awhile it will go into a hybernation like
state. You can make adjustments in the Power Options (Control Panel)
settings.
Here's a link to help show you how to work with it:
Hey. I was just at a vista seminar last week and the school of thought on
that is mainly for businesses. If the machine is in sleep mode, it "starts
up" faster.
Honestly.. thats what they said. It is really just a way to make workers
get going faster and making vista seem "FAST" and they still recommend
restarting your machine "every couple of days or when it seems to be acting
slow".
So THAT is why they did it.

They want everyone to use sleep instead of shutdown, that way people will
'think' it starts faster when it wakes up.
Like most of Vista, it is trying to use Eye Candy & tricks to make you think
it's better.
Sit, roll over, stay...Nice Doggy, here's a bone for your master...just tell
him to bend over....

Not for the Power button on the Start Menu, I guess (I have Sleep, Shut
Down, and Hibernate as options in Advanced settings). You'll have to use
the arrow to the right of the Lock button, to Restart.

I do not have an "Advanced Settings" option, amd no reference to the Start
Menu (only the power button and closing the lid). Is this dependent on what
version of Vista one is running? I am using Home Premium on an HP laptop --
perhaps this option is only available in Business or Ultimate, perhaps?

No, it's available on Home Premium as well. To get to "Advanced Settings",
go to Control Panel\Power Options, and under your chosen Plan, on the right
side of the window, choose "Change plan settings". On the new Edit Plan
Settings window, click on "Change advanced power settings". A new dialog
will pop up. Expand the "Power buttons and lid" entry, and then expand the
"Start Menu power button" entry.
