I would like to replace some of the standard VHP icons
with icons downloaded from the net. Where do I put those
new files (.png) to make them accessible?
In C:\windows\system32 there does not appear to be icon
storage. When I change icon using the Vista supply, it
shows %SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll as the source.
And, when I 'change icon' and browse to the desktop
folder containing downloaded new icons (.png format),
they're invisible.
This should be a simple task - obviously I'm missing
some key step. Windows Help, as usual, is helpless.
???

Yes, I did. But the response was something like "no icon
files found..." I even changed one of the .png files to
..ico, but it made no difference.

You can put them anywhere you want, because whatever mechanism is being used
to select an icon should have the ability to browse to where the file is
located and select it.
For instance, if you right-click a desktop short-cut, go to Properties and
select Change Icon, you can change it by browsing to a location.
If you want follow Windows standards, this is where Windows system icons are
stored:
%SystemRoot%\system32

Did you select the option on the browse when you browsed to the location
where they were at to *show all files* in the File Types dropdown box?
