Vista used to boot fairly quickly. It would quickly flick from the Welcome
screen to my desktop. Now, for about a week, it hangs on the welcome screen
for about 35 seconds, then the screen goes black for about another 30 seconds
before by task bar appears and then finally my desktop. Then everything
appears to work OK.
Has anyone else got this problem? More importantly, does anyone know why it
has started happening and what can be done to get my previous speedy bootup
back?
I have even tried a complete distructive re installation but the problem
persists.
It is a new machine that came with Vista Home Premium installed; has 500gb
HDD; 2gb RAM; Intell Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz.

Yes I have installed new programms, though I am not sure that this has added
to this strange glitch, as I was having this problem so I carried out a full
distructive re installation and it was still there with just the original
programmes that were loaded when the problem did not occur.

Run msconfig. Choose start Windows with common services and startup programs
turned off. Then turn them back on, one at a time until you find the
culprit.

Bob, Since my last message I gave the situation further thought and decided
to try a clean re installation again. This time, I check by restarting first
after windows vista installed, and then after each software installation. It
took a bit longer but I now have mt system back running fast as before. I
did get the black screen hangup once and the culprit is either the SP1 patch
for Office 2007, or the Add-On pack for Norton 360. After uninstalling the
Add-On pack and doing a system restore to a point earlier than when the SP1
patch was downloaded and installed, the system was once again OK. I will re
check each of the ossible offenders separately and hopefully identify the
culprit once and for all.

Now do yourself a favor and get rid of Norton (a disaster waiting to
happen). Replace it with either AVG or Avast...both are free.

Bob is correct. Get rid of Norton. I've spent the past two months
testing antivirus programs on my machine. All of my slow startup and
shutdown problems were antivirus related and Norton was one of several
that were particularily bad.
AVG is good and light on resources. I have found Avira to work the best
with my configuration. If you're willing to experiment a little, I would
recommend testing a few and see which works best for you. You may also
want to try Avast (Oops, I see Bob already suggested this), but stay
away from resource hogs like Norton and McAfee, and the all-in-one
security suites.
I now have mys system running like lightening. I experienced more problems
with Norton, but the were resolved when I uninstalled. The Microsoft updates
weren't to blame. Before I bought this new machine I had been using AVG and
Zonealarm very successfully and without problems. I never was a fan of Norton
but was persuaded to take 360 by an offer that I thought I couldn't refuse
when I bought the machine. "Shan't do that again!!!"

Your are both right. I now have a system running like lightening without
Norton. I never was a fan of norton but was persuaded by an offer I thought
I could't refuse when I bought the new machine. I too had carried out a
number of trials on various antivirus and firewall software and had
previously been using AVG and Zonealarm very successfully for a long time.
