Default Is Vista Hungry: Installed Applications Disappearing

Hi,

Bizare question...is anyone else experiencing disappaering applications in
Vista? I am currently "missing" two applications I KNOW I installed on my
new Vista Business Sony laptop: iOmega's Auto Backup 1.02 and Xara's Webstyle
4. Others have also disappeared but I was able to convince myself I just
never installed them yet.

Does Vista auto-uninstall when I'm not looking?

No, I'm not kidding,

Do you mean disappearing program icons on your Start Menu, or complete
uninstallation including program folder and files?

I mean complete uninstallation. No icons, no shortcuts, no folders in
C\Program Folder, no application. Gone. Almost like a system restore to a
point before the application was installed. I'm not crazy, I can prove it.
I use iOmega's Auto Backup to backup my stuff once a week. I plug in my
external hard drive to do the backup. No iOmega prgram. On my external hard
drive I have last weeks back up with dates. I'm perplexed.

Thanks, RickB

RickB,

Wow, that is, well... pretty effin' weird. You win the prize! (Just
kiddin'... no funds for prizes here... unless one lusts for an empty
Spagetti-O's can... ;-) )

You're using the same account (as the acct that installed the apps) when
attempting to access these apps?

System restore doesn't touch apps, as far as I know... so that shouldn't be
an issue. (If I'm mistaken in that assumption, no doubt others will gladly,
if not gleefully, point out my error. To be more specific... system restore
may whack the entries for your app[s] in the registry but it is -not- going
to delete the files from the Programs dir. Unless my assumption is
incorrect... LOL!)

You're not using a third party imaging tool that you might've used to snap
an image of your seat that gets automatically restored to your seat by elves
in the middle of the night? (Definitely -not- kidding about this...)

Good luck!

Lang

Lang, system Restore will take out any programs that have been installed
after the restore point date that you set the system back to.
Or it did in XP; I have not had to use it in Vista yet, touch wood!

Hey... don't underestimate your golden they are really smart
dogs:-) Have you done a search for the exe associated with these
programs? Maybe they accidentally got moved from the original
installation location. Probably wouldn't account for the loss of
the shortcuts though.
