I'm having a problem using Windows Vista 64 bit. Occasionally every one
minute to an hour, my mouse will not click anything on the screen anymore.
This happens in both Windows and in games. The only way to rectify the issue
is to ctrl-alt-delete, and choose to open the task manager. From this point,
I am able to click again.
I believe that explorer or the active game is losing focus, to an invisible
application. I have tried using three different mice, fully reinstalled
mouse drivers (and any hidden mouse drivers), removed any running software or
processes which were active.
I'm not quite sure where to go from here, and I'm practically ready to
reinstall Windows if I cannot find a solution.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm having the exact same problem on a brand new install of 64bit. In fact,
this issue was happening during the setup process. Very weird.

Are you using the default MS mouse drivers or the vendor's?
If the latter, you might switch to the MS defaults and see if that fixes
your problem.

Here's something interesting.. .I've plugged in an PS2 mouse.... not using
it.. just plugged it in... rebooted and things are working fine on 2 reboots.
Will do some more testing... and rebooting... and see if I can duplicate the
issue consistently.

Well, on another reboot the problem resurfaced and the PS2 mouse also was not
able to select certain items.. .in this case the desktop was accessable but
not the gadgets or the menu bar. So... perhaps it's not just a USB issue
after all.

As I mentioned, I thought I remembered something during setup so I stuck the
Vista DVD in and and re-ran the install. After successfully clicking
through the first two screens I am presented is the "Type your product key
for activation" window. It's at this point that I am getting a consistent
glitch. I cannot click in the text window nor uncheck the check box nor
click on next. However, simply hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL fixes things and off I
go (which I must have done on the original install).
Again, any insight would be gratefully accepted. In the meantime... I'll
start turning things on and off in the bios hoping to find the culprit.

OK. I'm an idiot. I tried different memory, different memory slots, a
different video card, different USB ports.... even Windows 7 beta... and, for
some stupid reason didn't think to actually unplug the one wireless mouse's
base plug! As long as it was plugged in the problem persisted. Unplug that
silly thing... and every other mouse works fine. Sigh. I need a better
troubleshooting protocol!

Really, it's par for the course*. It's one of the penalties for being
human.

I also have this issue with my Labtec "ultra flat wireless desktop"
keyboard and mouse.
I first saw this issue in WinXP 32bit (where alt-tabbing is sufficient
to fix it) and hoped that upgrading to Vista 64bit would help but it
didn't. Thanks for the Ctrl-alt-del tip, that seems to work as a
temporary work-around.
Is there a better solution than buy another keyboard and mouse?
