You're not answering my questions so I can't help you. Either provide a
full description of your laptop (make/model), what operating system came
preinstalled, and how Vista was installed OR take the laptop to a
professional computer repair shop.
it's xp professional and lap top is hewlet packard compac nc 4000. vista was
not an upgrade but a clean download.

Looking on HP's site for your notebook indicates that you would have
received recovery disks for Windows XP in order to return the machine to
factory condition. I can't determine whether or not there was also a
hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. Refer to your laptop manual
or contact HP to be sure.
If you for what ever reason no longer have the hidden recovery partition
or the recovery disks, contact HP to order them. They are quite
inexpensive, under $25 USD.
Then back up your data and follow the recovery procedure per HP's
instructions.
