Default Trouble downloading/installing applications with vista

I have been having trouble recently with downloading and installing
programs from the internet to my internal harddrive on my laptop which
uses vista. I've tried downloading and saving several applications to my
program files. The applications download and consume space on my
harddrive, however the installation process never commences and when i
try to locate the apps they aren't in the folders i saved them to. Can
someone help me please, i've already scanned my comp with both
malwarebytes' anti-malware and AVG and found no viruses.

What is the error message during installation and where did you save them?
Would you like to try save them on the desktop? Some program may need
InstallSheild to be working. Some may need some version of .net framework.
Tell me the program name and I can take a look for you.
