Default start up problem

when i turn on my laptop which is running on preinstalled vista all i get is
a black scrren no desktop taskbar start up menu etc but if i go control alt
delete and gp to task manager and select new task and open explorer it just
pops back up any one any ideas as to why this happens and know how to fix it

Can you reboot into Safe Mode and check the Event Viewer to see if there any
error messages logged that might help in diagnosing the problem? Have you
recently installed any applications or devices that might have triggered
this? Can you do a System Restore to an earlier point in time before you
started experiencing this problem?
