Default Stalls on bootup

This is a single sata drive.
Vista home premium . Not an update.
The marching ants stalls in the box at the bottom of the screen.
I reboot and most the time it will bootup.
I have used the repair my computer.
Defragged, I have not reinstalled Vista.

Hi,

Does it mostly happen when the system is "cold" - ie: not been used for a
little while? Or does it happen when you simply restart the machine?

The former may indicate faulty hardware that is not functioning properly
until it is warmed up. This doesn't get better, the faulty component will
need to be replaced.

Hi,

Usually, the faulty component has a weak solder joint or similar, and when
heat is applied (power on) it warms up and expands after a few moments and
works properly. This is why it fails initially, but then seems to work
perfectly fine. No software update will fix that, it is a physical flaw.

Check the motherboard for bad capacitors. If it is bad capacitors it will
only get worse.

I don't know how to check the capacitors. But
this seem like the way to go. Replace the board.

A visual check is usually sufficient. The articles I linked to have
pictures.
