Default Sounds as if computer is turning off but isn't??!

Greetings all,

Running Vista Home Premium on P4 3.2 Hyper-thread machine.

As i am doing regular computer/net stuff, i hear a sound from the tower
that one would hear when the computer shuts off??!

And then, at other times, it will sound as if it is starting up again??!

Has anybody a possible explanation for this - it's got me stumped - it
never happened when i was running XP Pro.

Is it a Vista feature to conserve power??

Would it possible have anything to do with running SpeedFan (with NO
configuration outside the default settings)??

Con-foozed - please help!

TIA,

Ray

Sounds like it's a hard drive switching off after x minutes of inactivity.
Have you got more than one hard drive?

Sounds spot on. Mine do that too. It is strange until you get used to it.
Vista seems to be much better at power management than XP.

Same here! It seems like it's always spinning down my
IDE drive more often. I have 3 SATA's and 1 IDE.
I can hear the IDE one spin down. I tested this by unplugging
it and the sound went away (well at least it's not as often)

I Have my drives set to power off after 120 min but it still seems to
happen more often than that.

Yes i do. I hear a click sound every couple of minutes, like the thing
is shutting down. Then, when i do something resource intensive, i'll
hear like a whirling sound as something does something!

Oh well, as long it ain't breakin' down, i don't care what it's doin'!!

After it shuts down, it will start again once that drive needs to be
accessed again. Just opening Computer will do this.
