What happens when you go to Control Panel, Sound icon, Sounds tab and select
a program event (one for which the test button isn't greyed out)? Do you
hear the sound? Look above the events list and make sure 'No Sounds' isn't
selected. Use Windows default sound scheme.

I have had a similar problem - I have selected the default sounds theme and
when I test the sounds there is nothing. I have the latest sound card and
have tested the speakers. There are no other sound problems other than this.
Any ideas?

Mark and Jaimz,

Open the volume mixer (right click speaker, 'Open Volume Mixer')
Check that the column for 'Windows Sounds' is not muted and has a non-zero
level.

Thanks for your reply, however, I have checked all volume controls, levels,
etc. nothing is muted and all other sounds are working. I have been into
device manager, checked the sound settings and levels, fully tested the
speakers, etc. I'm baffled.

Have you tried uninstalling the audio driver under Device Manager, restart
the system, let it redetect it and the reinstall it?

I tried that too. Incidentally thanks for the reply and apologies for not
replying sooner. I'm really baffled by this.

Hi guys:

What i think is going on here is that Vista Basic has the audio mixer
disabled. I did say think because i can't be sure. But Vista took away that
nice mixer panel we had under XP where you could adjust audio levels of just
about anything. In my case, Vista won't let me load the old driver and
insists that the Intel driver is the correct one. But i still can't mix audio
in with anything else. Its probably in Vista Home Premium or its coming out
as a separate app.

I was not able to hear audio on YouTube. On the mixer the YouTube sound was
muteed. Unmuted and works just fine
