Also do not install Spybot Tea Timer. It will really slow down the startup.

I bet he's also got Limewire installed. Every computer I've ever seen it
installed on is slow and it's on just about every computer that a 12-25
year old has access to.
I also accidentally installed a registry cleaner from a Cnet banner ad
once, from clicking too fast, and then a cancel button that seemed to
install it. Removing it was worst than removing a virus. They are like
the plague stay far far away.
Registry cleaners are the last thing you would want to do, you might as well
hammer a screwdriver through the hard drive. If your car is not running
well, do you open the hood and yank out wires? Two things: a) there are
redundant entries for a reason, and b) dead entries do NOT inhibit
performance, they do NOTHING.
A slow system is normally the result of bloatware and crap loading as part
of the startup axis. The solution is to limit that which loads at boot to
only what's really necessary.

So called registry cleaners that claim to be automatic are simply
dangerous, if a specific issue in the registry occurs there's usually a
Microsoft KB article on the subject and that is the only safe way to go,
one thing at a time.
Running ScanDisk can help and Mark Russinovich wrote the "Engine" behind
PowerDefragmenter which also seems to help and that's the only two
"Automated" methods I ever use.
