I recently tried the Zone Alarm Security suite (it was a free offer) on my
Vista computer and ended up uninstalling it because Vista refused to shut
down....just wondring if you have recently installed a Zone Alarm product
or similar?

Logically it might not be a process related to your user account, so click
on [Show processes from all users] and work through that list. The risk is
(i.) some processes you can't kill and (ii.) killing some processes might
cause problems for windows, such as some things no longer working.

As an alternative, try shutting down services instead, as it might be a
process related to a service which is causing problems.
When you do find the offending process please post back so others can
benefit.

Thinking at a tangent for a moment (and please don't shout at me if I'm
wrong, this is just a stab in the dark):
Back on the old days of 95/98/Me etc, this could be caused by a corrupt .wav
file. Windows would stubbornly try to play its shutdown sound despite being
unable to, and appear to hang. The fix was to pick a different shutdown
sound or set it to none.
Now, one would hope this isn't still an issue all these years later but you
never know. Try setting your shutdown sound to none and see what happens.
