SATA II Copy Failures with nVidia Chipset & Vista/Windows Server2008
As described previously, copying or using Microsoft's "Backup" to
transfer 5+GB amounts of data between SATA II drives can result in a
system hang and in software disconnection of one of the drives. The
failure is reproducible. Recovery requires a cold start. This problem
has been reported by a number of users to occur with Vista and with
Windows Server 2008.
We have had repeated copy failures with an EVGA 680i SLI mainboard and
none with a Dell PowerEdge 1800 computer. The latest BIOS and drivers
did not correct the 680i failures. This board has been replaced with an
Intel D975XBX2. There have been no copy failures with the same SATA II
drives and operating system running on the Intel mainboard.
It is unclear if the copy failures are related to the nVidia nForce 680i
MCP chipset, its specific usage on the EVGA board, the drivers, the
Vista/Windows Server 2008 operating systems or some combination of these
items.
