The "Safely Remove Hardware" in taksbar's system tray...

I use more than 1 usb mass storage. When I want to disconnect one of then I
am forced to remember which logical drive letter it was using in order to
properly disconnect it. In my opinion it would be much easier to see the
volume label if instead of the logical drive letter. In Vista, where many
details were taken into consideration, I found this would contribute to
better usability. It's a basic thing that I miss.

You don't have to remember in my experience if you simply click the icon in
the notification area in my experience with an IPOD although maybe it is
different with multiple devices at once. What happens whoever when you type
diskmgmt.msc into the run box elicited by hitting the Windows Key + R?

I guarantee you then you will see all your devices displayed on their
logical drive letter. It takes a few seconds granted. The drive letter
itself shows for me at the notification area with a mouseover.

Send the feedback to MSFT. There is no guarantee that the appropriate team
will ever read it here. I only know of two people from there who have
contributed to any of these groups more than once and two who contributed
once. So whether they read it or not is happenstance. You could use MSWISH
which I regard as talking to a cemetary, or you could try to find the
closest MSDN blog and then use the contact them button. You could also
provide the feedback to the Vista Team blog. I have no idea which team of
the couple thousand people or so who work on Vista does that particular
item, but you could contact the Shell Team at

Meanwhile, if one of those storage devices is an Apple Ipod, Nano, Shuffle,
MSFT has an update for the very feature you speak of which sometimes can
corrupt the tunes on an Ipod although it has never done so for me without
the update:

Just for the records, the detail of my issue is:

I have 2 USB flash-memory devices (standard pen-drives).
Depending on the order I connect them they are assigned logical drive
letters F: and G: and sometimes these letters are swapped. In the taskbar the
"Safely Remove Hardware" icon tooltip does not show me the corresponding
volume label. Thus sometimes I disconnect the unintended USB device by
mistake.

When you right click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Notification
Area and dialog box pops up,

There is a check box at the bottom of that dialog called, Display Device
Components. Place a check mark in that box and it will show details of each
USB device that is connected, including the brand name, drive letter and the
USB port that it is connected to. The ports will always be the same. Once
you remember where each port is located on the PC, it will be easy to pick
the proper device. It will also be much easier if you have a couple of
devices that are different brands.
