Is the hard disk a SATA drive? If yes, you may need to load the SATA drivers
for your controller during the Vista install. Another option may be to go
into the BIOS and see if you can set the HDD to ATA compatibility. Then
install Vista and find the SATA drivers. Install those drivers and go back
to BIOS and reset the HDD back to SATA.

I have since found that I have a bad hard drive by running the hard drive
self test. My laptop is less than a year old so HP will send me a
replacement.
