Well, I deleted ubuntu from the second hard drive but forgot that it
left its boot loader behind. So, now I have a machine that boots up
with the following:
GRUB loading, please wait
Error 17
I cannot find the ****ed GRUB loader in my C directory, but it has to be
there, eh?
So, how do I get rid of it and restore my normal VISTA bootup?

It has been many years since I was faced with this problem, but I
believe there is a way to restore your master boot record, using the
Vista installation DVD.

I'm coming in way late - if anybody's still following this thread - but I
had this problem just this morning. I had a dual Ubuntu/Vista boot doing
fine. But I wanted to reinstall Ubuntu for troubleshooting purposes. So I
re-formatted Ubuntu's partition in Vista to prepare for the reinstall, and
voilá ! I got "Grub Loading....Error 17" on the reboot.
I did try running the Vista Startup Recovery from the Vista DVD as well - I
ran it several times - and it did nothing to repair the Grub problem.
I tried the Bootrec.exe and all that stuff - no go. I tried reinstalling
Ubuntu on its old partition and it would stop midway thru the install.
Finally (after accidentally erasing Vista anyways) I reinstalled Ubuntu on
the whole hard drive and cleaned everything out. And that worked. But I
wanted my dual boot situation back and my wireless still won't work with
Ubuntu - that's why I tried the reinstall to begin with.
So where is this laptop now? In the shop. Don't get me wrong...I like
Ubuntu and Vista both very much, but lately, the Linux problems make
Windows' issues seem like a walk in the park in comparison.
