Program wont run - box appears

We have a problem where periodically one of our programs stops working. When
this happens, we double click the icon to start the program and a box appears
in the bottom left of the screen. Nothing shows in the task manager, and the
box itself will not respond to a left or right click in any way.

Our only way to get teh program to work again is to restart the computer.
Once that is done, our printer is offline and it requires a power down to use
again.

We are running Vista Home Premium.
