Here's his original post.

Hi everybody,
I installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Eveything seems OK except for Windows
Media Player V 12, which doesn't seem to be able to play mpeg files.
is it "normal" ? Should WMP normally play such files? Should I download some
kind of extra plug-in? If so, is there any free plug-in available?
many thks in advance for your kind help.
with best regards,
Daniel

As you suggested I downloaded VLC, which can indeed play all these files.
However, when it comes to playing DVD, I find the difference to be huge:
Windows Media Player is much better.
This why I would have liked to "repair" WMP to see what results I get when
playing mpg/mpeg files.
Is it possible to reinstall it?
Daniel.
I was hoping your problem would be fixed by now. This link may give you
some information to help. It is for vista though. '@ScottW How-To Geek

Reinstalling WMP is possible in Windows 7 (I think somewhere in Control
Panel - Programs and Features), but it's unlikely that this will fix the
problem. The MPEG codec isn't part of WMP, but of the OS itself.
Did you install any codec packs? If so, try removing these. They are no
good and problems like this can occur when installing them.
Your message is interesting. Is there a way to re-install the codecs which
are part of the OS (Windows 7 in my case) ? Or, is there a way to check
whether these codecs are present on my system and, for some reason
"de-activated" ?
As far as I know, there isn't a way to reinstall the required codec,
other than reinstalling Windows. Did you try reposting this to the
Windows 7 Music and sound forum, as suggested a few messages earlier?
What's the exact error message you get when trying to play MPEG files?
