Check out the TCP/IP properties. In that window you will see two tabs. The
second tab is "Alternate Configuration". That should be what you need.

once i put in an alternate IP address, how will the network know which
IP to choose or will it try both

It will try both. When the primary config fails when you're home, it will
automatically try the alternate config.
