Default Media Player gone awol

Media player disappeared this morning.
Icon is still there, but clicking on it does nothing.
Similarly clicking on an MP3 does nothing.
In media centre the library is there, but nothing plays when selected.

I've tried a system restore back to 5 days ago, but nothing changed.

Any help on how to get it back would be welcome )

After trawling through other posts I tried turning off User Access Control.
Media Player all works again, but now the machine is vulnerable.
Can I trace what the problem is?
(Windows Restore didn't get rid of the fault)
If so many others are hitting this problem, how come I can't find anything
from MS about it?

What happened before this happened?

I believe this is perceived to be the result of some buggy software
incorrectly locking access to the player's registry values/keys.
Identifying that bad software is of high value.
