What do I have to do to get media player 11 to player video clips off
the internet automatically? It makes me save them to my computer
first.
Any ideas?

and you should be correctly configured again.

I am having the same issue. I am not really a tech guy and am not sure what
you mean by "set these". How do I perform the instructions you suggested.
Sorry for the ignorance.
Thanks,

File associations (what's forced below) has ALWAYS been poison to
Windows for a whole host of reasons. In laymen's terms some
applications, ESPECIALLY dumb old Windows, need to know what it can
and shouldn't do when confronted with certain file types. Smarter
application simply see a file type and act accordingly. Windows isn't
that smart. It needs help. Sometimes lots of it. To muddy the water
further, some third party applications override file associations
without asking your first and "force" their application to open/play
certain file types replacing whatever file associations may have
already been setup. The end result is while the new application you
just installed may now work correctly it may very well break other
applications that until you installed the new application were working
ok, now they may no longer...including most applets part of Windows
like dumb old Media Player that is mostly brain dead to begin with.
One way to "fix" this is fiddle around in Windows' Registry. Lots of
people don't like to mess with Windows' Registry because it just takes
one tiny typo to totally trash your system to the point it can become
unbootable, so generally I don't like to tell people to fiddle with
the Registry and for some MS guy to suggest you make whosale changes
seems a bit over the top.
There is another simpler, more user friendly way.
Go to Control Panel, Default Programs. Click on the second choice
called "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".
Wait for Vista to finish scanning your system, (can take a minute or
longer) then you'll see a rather long alphabetical list of every file
type Vista currently understands (or is suppose to) and what programs
if any are associated with certain file types.
Once you see the list, scan it for file types you are having trouble
with. Assume for example you have trouble playing AVI files. Go down
the list till you find .avi. Now highlight that line, then click the
button you see near the upper right top corner of this window and
Windows will present a list of every application on your system that
can play this file type. Pick something different than what is
currently associated ONLY if whatever is currently associated doesn't
not work correctly. Example on my system I have 14 different
applications that can play .avi files. So if I were to click one, that
simple click equals the Registry hack.
If you look at zachd's list you see he suggests you associate .avi
files with WMP11 (that's Windows Media Player) but that's a bit
disingenuous since he probably knows as any experencied person that
works with video files on a regular basis will quickly tell you Media
Player frequently gets confused with some flavors of .AVI files
refusing to play them, so associating WMP11 with .avi is a HORRIBLE
choice!
If you don't see any other choices, then there is currently nothing on
your system that plays the file type to clicked on other then the one
that's currently associated. You can download and install something
else. The dirty little secret Microsoft never likes to talk about it
re-associating some file types breaks Windows' applets. Now you know.
So yes, I do get po-ed when I see some MS person telling you to do
something he problably knows isn't very good advice just to defend
Microsoft's crap that we all know is broken and badly in many areas.
This is just one such area.
When you make a change as I suggested, you should right after
immediately see the icon for the file type you changed also change in
Explorer. If you don't get the desired result, try associating the
file type with another application. Yes, it can be trial and error
especially for video file types which is something Windows has NEVER
done well and still doesn't.
If you still want to do it the hard way you need a Registry
Editor/viewer. Windows comes with one build in. Crude, but it works,
just be careful!
Click on the Start button type in 'regedit' then click on it to open.
It works similar to Windows Explorer.

Could you clarify exactly what you mean by "same issue"? Are you saying
that you had installed SatelliteTVforPC too?
What is the current state of your machine? Is WMP working or broken, and if
broken, how is it broken? =)

When I go to a website and click a link that has a movie (i.e. a wmv file),
it used to play in the media player while it was downloading. Now I click on
any website link that has a wmv file, WMP11 makes me download the file first
before I can play it. After downloading the file, WMP11 will play the movie.
This issue occured just this past week and I have no idea what caused it
(did not install satelliteTV).
Thanks,

If by "same issue" you meant that you installed SatelliteTVforPC, reregister
WMP.dll, and then this broke... then the other simpler way won't touch this
in any fashion, sorry. You can either reset the registry keys I suggested,
reinstall Windows, or ignore this issue.
Adam here is simply confused about how file associations work - these
registry keys are internal to the Media Player and have no relevance to
shell associations whatsoever. Updating the "AVI" value below won't change
the AVI association. It just fixes a check that's been broken when you had
to reregister WMP.dll. That's not something any average user should ever
need to be doing ever. If SatelliteTVforPC led to you needing to do this,
this is a very serious error on their part.
Regardless of anything on your system, the registry keys I specified below
should be and must be the values specified. They have no impact upon
anything whatsoever other than WMP.

What's the value of
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, CLSID\{CD3AFA94-B84F-48F0-9393-7EDC34128127}\ProgID
on your system?
How did you get into this state? This would probably require either local
associations to have been brokenly changed or WMP.dll to have been
reregistered.

Funny you need to pled with customers to do Registry hacks to fix a
broken Windows install. This is suppose to be some security
improvement?
I guess this is part of the "wow" campaign. Tell customers to mess
with the Registry, but wait, wow, they may fuc*k up their whole system
if they do, so you tell them you could ignore the issue. Priceless!
Don't ever expect Zach to admit Windows is so ******* up as he hints
at below saying you need to "fix" a check. So **** funny. Really it
is.

So the fault really is in how WP.dll gets registered. Right?
Zach, your a riot. A user should never have to fiddle with the
Registry, yet here you telling a user to do exactly that confirming
another failing of Windows. Oops you had to reregister WMP.dll, that
breaks something else. ROTFLMAO!
>If SatelliteTVforPC led to you needing to do this,

Again, the threadbear ain't Windows' fault routine. Nothing ever is in
Microsoft's eyes yet here's a Microsoft employee telling the user to
fiddle with the Registry which is exclusively Windows. So what's
really broke? Times up. Windows is. That's what's most broke.

If they should be and must be, why aren't they protected with UAC?
Doesn't Microsoft tell us what a great feature UAC is and how it
protects your system?
Lets review. There's a routine accessible from Control Panel that
Microsoft goes to great lengths in it's help system to explain how
this changes file associations. Along comes Zach who spills the beans
saying Media Player needs some additional Registry keys in order to
work properly, admits oops, some rogue third party application may
tamper with them, how, he as no idea, then says the only way to fix it
is to tinker with the Registry which UAC of course doesn't protect. A
riot. I'm telling ya, Vista is sure dumb. It will nag like crazy over
deleteing a shortcut from your desktop but does nothing to prevent
some third party application from trashing Media Player.
