You don't really want to be flashing your bios, except as a last resort, and
only if you've exhausted all the usual avenues. It's very risky and if you
get it wrong you will no longer have a laptop, but a glorified doorstop.
The main reason for slowness is usually pretty simple - ie just too many
programs running. As a camel weighed down with too many packages runs
slowly, so does a computer with too many services + programs weighing it
down.
Autoruns (free download) can help you to see what you have running at
startup, and help you to decide what you need and what you don't.
