Default installing win98 in virtualpc 2007 running on vista

I have installed virtual pc 2007 on my vista ultimate computer. I want to
set up a win98 virtual machine to run an old scanner that I have. When I go
to install win 98 it will not install because virtual pc expects to boot of
of the cd. I have two copies of win 98, neither are bootable but instead
have setup.exe files. So then I boot from a win98 boot floppy with cd
suppport, thinking I can do this and then run the exe file to setup win 98.
But, the boot floopy boots to a point where it says there is no drive
formatted with fat 32. I have to ignore this error. So, when I finally get
to a command prompt it does not recognize my cd drive. My question is how do
I actually get to install win 98 in a virtual machine? Thanks for any help,
Robert

I've had a few drinks, so trying to understand your post is just not
possible. But I have Win98 installed on VirtualPC with no problems. It
shouldn't be hard to find somebody that has a bootable CD, if you do not
have one.

Is it a USB scanner though? VirtualPC has no USB support.

Hi,

After booting from the floppy, run fdisk and create a primary volume in the
virtual machine. Exist fdisk and restart to the floppy, format the new
volume, then run setup from the Win98 CD.

It's just like a real Win98 install to an unformatted disk.

You have to "format" the virtual drive first before you can install an
operating system on it. Boot with a Win98 boot floppy image that has Fdisk
and Format on it and 1) create your partition; 2) format your partition.
Then use the boot floppy (which needs to have CD drivers on it) and create
C:\Windows and then copy from the Win98 CD to C:\Windows. Then cd into that
directory after the copying is done and start setup.exe. I believe you can
get the necessary floppy image from one of the VPC expert's website. Post
in the Virtual PC newsgroup for details. They can also tell you if you'll
be able to run your scanner in a virtual machine.

Default RE: installing win98 in virtualpc 2007 running on vista

Thanks for the help. I was able to create a c: drive and get it formatted.
Now at an command line prompt I am unable to access my cd drive. The
bootdisk on a: installs the cd drivers on bootup. I have gone into virtual
pc settings and tried setting the cd drive to both primary and secondary
controller. Nothing seems to work. Any more ideas?

Thanks
Robert

Make a new bootdisk.
