Does anybody know if it is possible to install windows Vista with a
Windows 7 license key? I'm planning to buy a new pc but I don't want to
switch to 7 right away, I prefer to upgrade only later on. If I'm
correct it was possible to install XP with a Vista license, but I can't
seem to find the same information for Windows 7 ...

It depends. Microsoft does not give downgrade rights from Retail
versions. But, Microsoft does give downgrade rights from OEM versions
of Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate to Vista (or XP for a limited
time). The Windows 7 license key will not work with Vista (and,
neither did the Vista key work to install XP). As I understand it
Microsoft does not provide the media to install it, nor do they
provide a license key. You will have to get the media and key from
the OEM.

No it's not possible, and you remember incorrectly, it wasn't possible to
install XP with a Vista key either.

I'm not sure of what you want to do, but you can install Vista
without entering a product key. When you come to the dialog
box asking for your key just click 'Next'.
You have 30 days to make up your mind before activation is required.
During that time all updates etc. will be downloaded as normal.
The same goes for Win7. You can install it without entering
a product key. You have 30 days before activation as with Vista.

unactivated, and do a Windows 7 upgrade. A Windows 7 license is valid for an
XP upgrade so I'm wondering if this would let me upgrade to 7 from XP.

I haven't got a clue but I would leave Vista out of anything you try.
Involving Vista would probably give you problems.
Try asking in a Win7 forum or group.
You should start your own thread rather than hijacking someone else's.
