Default Indexing and Re-indexing database object in Vista

I don't know whether this has been published before, but couldn't find any
references to it. In MSAccess 2002 and Family Tree Maker 2005 when choosing
alternate indexing of the data, Vista takes about 10-20 times as long to
complete this operation as Windows XP.
I'm comparing my old laptop Pentium4 2.6 GHz with XP 512Kb Ram to Vista Core
Duo 2.33GHz with 4Gb Ram.
I would have thought the latter should have at least as good a performance.
I have tried nearly all the recommended performance improvements that can be
tweaked in Vista to no avail. Am I missing something on improving
performance of database objects in Vista?
