Indexing

Is there anyway I can turn of the indexing function. It seems to really be slowing down my whole syste.

I think that you can go into the control panel and uninstall the
indexing service. You can also right click on your dive under the
Computer, go to properties, and then un-check the intex files option.
When you do this you can then ally this to all of your logical drives.
I have also noticed that you might need to temporarily turn off the
UAC because it prohibits permission access to some of the files on the
main drive even if you are an administrator.

I hope that this is helpful... (i am new to windows and do not know of
other way).

You can disable it from services.msc, but it should not be slowing down your
system though it can cause a lot of activity in some instances. It normally
slows down a few days after installation or major system change, but it runs
as a low priority service that halts when other demands are placed on the
system. If you cease the operation, you will find that the search function
may take far longer to locate files.

It's also known that some utility software, like older versions of adobe
acrobat, interfere with proper operation of the indexing service causing it
to not properly terminate when higher order usage is demanded. If it is
slowing your system down, you may want to examing what software bits have
been installed on the system.

I don't believe it's the search and indexing system. What makes you suspect
it?

Just that the hard disk seems to be crashing around an awful lot of the time
and I have no idea what it doing....!

you can do some diagnose work using MSCONFIG,.
disable all the startup items and see if it is still there.
if not enable half of the startup items and check.
then enable the other half and see,
continue using the half in an attempt to narrow it down.

believe there is a disk tool with ms sysinternals that may help. take a look at them here.
