I agree with Peter a fair bit on this one. Its quite common that
random freezes can be related to hardware failure. A freeze that
presents you with a bluescreen message might be hardware or
software(need new drivers, etc)

However, if its just locking up all together. It could be a problem
with the configuration of your hardware(which shouldn't happen out of
the box if you havne't installed any new hardware), overheating (bad
sign, faulty cooling? faulty hardware? could be a numerous issues
which would require slow replacement of many parts) or bad ram(which
requires hardware replacement).

I'd personally agree with Peter's suggestion regaridng taking it back
to the store as the issues mentioned are all hardware related and non-
vista related.

Default RE: Help, My Computer keeps freezing

I'm a novice, so don't know if this is directly related or even helpful...

My daughter got a new laptop computer through her school, with Vista Home
Basic on it. We've seen it "freeze" several times a day since she got it
July 28. When we asked around, one person asked if Symantec's Norton Internet
Security was installed on it. It was, and with help yesterday at the local
computer shop, we had it removed. Cost us $60, as it took the fellow almost 2
hours to complete the installation. The "normal" uninstall did not work, and
caused various other problems, AND kept trying to reinstall itself. But
Symantec provides a specific program whose only purpose is to remove the
software.

Anyway... since removal of that software, no "freezes" have been observed,
and in fact the machine appears to be much more responsive now.
I replaced the Norton software with something called NOD32, recommended by
the shop staff. So far, everything is running properly.

I do not know much about computers. But from what the shop staff told us,
bad software can cause the system to crash.

Hi!

I have had this kind of freezing around one time each 2 days for 6 months
now.
And my hardware (memory, hard disk, BIOS, video, . . ) was tested and
everything is OK.

I'm about to install this reliability update which seems to be the solution
:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Bye!

Thanks for the tip. My Vista laptop freezes too. I downloaded the
upgrade, and hope that it works.

Did this reliability upgrade work for you? I have the same problem. Brand
new HP computer with Windows Vista and it will freeze up. I have to unplug it
to turn it off. I took the computer back and got another and it's doing the
same thing which makes me think it's a Vista problem, not a problem with my
computer hardware. I'm hesitant to do anything without knowing if it worked.
Thanks.
