Default Headphones problem

I have a problem with my PC, I have a Windows Vista running and my speakers
are working well, but when I unplug them and connect my headphones the
Windows recognize them as normal speakers not as headphones, the headphones
work and I can hear with them but I have problems in using them for chatting
since they are not recognized as headphones,
I don't know how to solve this???

Don't really see how Windows could tell the difference between speakers and
headphones and switch automatically, as electronically speaking, they are
pretty much the same thing...(?)
Why is it a problem that it thinks they are speakers? If it IS important, I
guess there must be a setting in the control panel for the sound system that
lets you select one or the other...(??)

Advanced options for switching from headphones to speakers are usually
included in the sound card drivers. Since you didn't tell us what sound
card you have and whether you upgraded Vista or got it preinstalled,
that's as specific as I can get. Check on the sound card mftr.'s website
for updated Vista drivers or if you have an OEM machine (Dell, HP, etc.)
check on the OEM's site for your specific model machine.

A workaround is to get a simple switch into which you can plug your
headphones. We use ones from Plantronics here.
