Hello Everyone. I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate, and I am having more
problems than I ever expected.
First, when I turn my computer on, (I run dual boot) and select Vista, I get
the blue screen of death with bunch of unkown errors. (I don't think I'm the
only one though) so I can not proceed unless in safe mode, any suggestions?
(I guess I should post this under the appropriate subject)
Now my other concern is the function keys. I am using Sony Vaio FS 660W and
in XP my Function keys (Fn+F...) always worked to turn up brightness/volume.
In Vista they don't do ANYTHING. Any help, suggestions?
For the FN+Fkey problem, you probably need a driver from Sony.

Did your computer come with Vista or did you add it? It sounds as though
you haven't installed Vista drivers. You would need to get them from
Sony's website for your specific model laptop since Sony uses
proprietary hardware. If Sony doesn't support Vista on your laptop, take
it off and return the entire machine to XP.
Thanks for the response.
No, I installed Vista myself. According to Sony, my model is not supported
for Vista, however, Vista upgrade advisor said, my computer will be able to
run vista and aero no problem, and it does, but with lots of errors.
It's overwhelming to fix them all...

There is your reason why you are having these issues. Take Vista off the machine and return the OS that came with it. If the manufacturer say's that their machine is not supported for Vista then there is a season for it as you have found out.

You won't be able to successfully run Vista on that machine, no matter
what the Upgrade Advisor said. Every piece of hardware inside or outside
(attached like a mouse, printer, etc.) has a software component - called
a driver - that tells the operating system how to use the hardware.
Without the correct drivers for that particular operating system, your
hardware will not work.
Hardware mftrs. are the ones who write drivers for their hardware, not
Microsoft. The hardware inside your Sony laptop was made for Sony for
that model laptop; this is what we mean by "proprietary". If Sony does
not support Vista on your model laptop, then you will never be able to
successfully run Vista on your laptop. This is a battle you can't win.
Back up your data and return the laptop to factory condition with
whatever restore process Sony has for the laptop.

I remember some days ago I was debating on this very NG the validity of
the Windows Upgrade Advisor. One of the points raised was that the
Upgrade Advisor is just that: An Advisor.
It's results serve as a guide only, and should not be taken as the only
source of information regarding an upgrade to Vista. If Sony themselves
have said that your computer does not support Vista, then why did you
upgrade anyway?

Well, unfortunately, I decided to make factors simple and go by what the
vista advisor said and proceed with installation. Now that I am having
problems with it, I did the research and found out Sony doesn't support this
model of laptop for vista. Had I known that earlier, I wouldn't installed it.
Once again, thanks to all of you for the help. I will take off vista and use
my Media Center as a primary OS (I had dual boot)
