Failure to read data files burned by the same machine
it turns out that the laptop cannot read data files that it burned. windows
explorer shows "Prepare this blank disc". the disks are read with no problem
by XP both on other machines and on the same machine using VMWare XP virtual
machine.

RE: Failure to read data files burned by the same machine
There is an ongoing discussion scattered around the web about the "Prepare
this blank disc" problem. In my case, I had a DVD burned on a Mac using
iDVD. When inserted into a PC running Vista, Windows Explorer displayed the
error dialog (when navigating to the drive letter of the DVD). Note however,
that most other programs seem able to access it -- VLC would play the DVD
just fine.
The current thought is that it may have something to do with VMWare or
auto-play being disabled.
Although it may sound odd, the fix that worked for me was to add a file --
any file -- to the
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Window s\Burn\Temporary Burn
Folder. There is normally a desktop.ini file in the dir, so just add one
more file.
