Default EXTERNAL MONITOR KILLS POWER PLAN ON HP NOTEBOOK

For years I have had an external monitor connected to my HP notebook
running XP Pro. I just purchased a new HP Pavilion with Vista
Ultimate. Suddenly, the same external monitor disables my power saving
settings. Without the external monitor physically connected to the
notebook, the power settings work fine. The external monitor is using
a generic PnP driver. Does anyone have any ideas?

I would contact HP support. They are actually pretty **** good at getting
back to you. I have had to HP Pavillion laptops and the support has been
super!

HP Tech Support told me to isolate whatever external device was
causing the problem, and then to stop using that external device. The
other option was to continue using the external device without the
benefit of power savings capability. Similarly, any doctor would tell
you that if you are eating something that makes you sick, then stop
eating it. Essentially, Tech Support said that the Power Plan function
was working as designed. For some reason, the external monitor was
keeping the system awake. The problem that I have with this theory is
that this same external monitor did not keep my XP Pro notebook awake.
Tech Support told me that Vista and XP Pro are "very different". There
must be a solution to this.

Apparently, the problem is intermittent. At the moment, the external
monitor goes to sleep according to the power plan in effect.
Yesterday, I was unable to get it to work while working with Tech
Support. I will continue testing.
