Cyberlink do some nice Vista compatible DVD software. The new DVD Ultra
suite is very good, and if that is too much, the suite components can be
bought individually..

You can buy a new DVD deck for as little as $19, most come bundled with DVD
playing software.
It's actually cheaper to buy a deck than the software individually...in most
cases.

If the hardware is "made for Vista" then surely the software is also "made
for Vista" ??

In the case of OEM DVD drives, they are not made specifically for Vista. I
don't know if the situation has changed but, for the longest time, optical
drives were sold with only XP compatible software. I haven't bought a DVD
drive recently, so don't know if there has been a change..

Just because the drive will work in Vista doesn't mean the bundled software
(if any, as most cheap DVD drives come with little or no software) is Vista
compatible.

I haven't had any problems playing DVD movies in my computer. All I have to
do is pop the movie in, and Windows Media Center automatically plays it.

Media Center is only available is Home Premium, and Ultimate. To get
playback in Home, the OP would have either have to do as Andre instructed or
use PowerDVD or something similar.
