Default dvd rom missing

this is now my third issue with vista fistst there was the networ
disapearance (resolved)second there is the issue of media center not working
(never has)
now my dvd romand dvd rw has vanished. i have removed them in device manager
but upon restart they fail to install (code 39)
am i heading for my second format and reinstall since march ( i thought id
given all that up since win 98)or is there a known fix for this ?
would i just be better running xp until vista is sorted?

Basiccally the below KB is the same as what Rick has posted with the only difference being that it does mention Code 39.
You can use either fix since it is the same and have the same satisfactory result

hi have been thru it all found i have no upperfilters but there were lower
filters
i was a bit dubious about deleting them my oldest lad suggested renaming them
xxx.xxxblahblah.net i tried this and it worked so i have now deleted them
i have also resolved media center,,
i found a freeware reg cleaner ran it and it pointed out some startup things
one of which was ehome something so i unticked this clicked repair and all
is working well
