If you did an upgrade and it didn't work out, consider starting over with a
clean install. But if you want to go back to XP here is a link to an MS KB
article on how to do so.

How to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you
install Windows Vista

Maybe better to set it up to dual-boot. Install XP alongside Vista.

Yes if the OP has a full version of Vista, either OEM or retail. One
cannot, per the license, dual boot Vista that was installed using an upgrade
license, and the qualifying OS. To dual boot you need a full version of
Vista, or with an upgrade version, two XP licenses, one to use as the
qualifying OS for the upgrade and one for the dual boot.

The OP didn't state specifically what they have, but I get the feeling it
was an upgrade.
