This does seem strange to me as I loaded Vista Home Premium (prior to SP1)
and when I tried to install office 2003, it declared it to be incompatible.
After it also refused to use Visual C++ 6.0, which I utilize and a few
others, I returned vista for a refund. Did sp1 solve these compatibility
problems?

Hi,
I suppose you do know that older SW has to be started up in compatibility
mode.
At least on my Vista all older SW where successfull even MSMoney from
1991-1996
