Command lines like "http://..." does not work anymore!

To give a link (like "http://...") as a command line does not work
anymore. Actually it was a standard since Win 98 and now Windows Vista
displays the message "Application not found."

My question: How to open link in Windows Vista using a command line?
Should one use a new command like prefix like "mailto:"?

These feature from Windows was really very practice for the
developers. I link could be opened without being necessary to search
for the default browser, an so on. Does anybody know how it can be
done now?

Are you talking about Vista? I have Vista Ultimate here and it does
not work.

Try it:
Windows Vista > Task-Manager > File > Execute > "http://
www.google.com" > Error message: "Application not found."
Windows XP > Task-Manager > File > Execute > "http://www.google.com" >
No error, the default web browser is just called.

Any help?

start iexplore.exe "http://..."

Is there any possibility to call the default browser instead of IE?

This was so simple. I really don't understand why they removed this
possibility from Windows Vista.

the command http:// entered into the new task command line of task manager
opens my browser in a new tab. Yours may not because you have no default
handler for the HTTP protocol selected in control panel/'Default Programs',
scroll down to the bottom for protocol settings.

Vista comes with default web browser (IE), but this protocol it
disable as default. Bad, bad...

Happily, you are in error. This functionality was not removed and works
perfectly on several machines that I just tried this on. (I take file
associations very seriously.)

As Mark helpfully pointed out, the fact that you are seeing an error here
strongly implies that your system is not configured properly. Since you
reference a third party browser here, that implies to me that that browser
has not correctly registered itself to handle "http://".

You do not name the browser that you are using, but the "application not
found" error indicates again that that application is not registered
properly. What specific browser are you trying to use?

I would strongly suggest you contact the browser vendor that you are
referring to and have them fix their file associations. We all enjoy every
browser and application working perfectly, and file associations are an
important but often overlooked part of that.
