Windows Vista was an easy target in 2007, and I almost feel bad picking on
the young OS. However, for the first time ever, Microsoft made Windows
upgrades available for download, which qualifies the operating system for my
dubious list.
Missing drivers, draining laptop batteries, poor software compatibility for
64-bit systems, confusing upgrade paths, and perhaps most insulting, poor
benchmark tests when compared to XP have all contributed to a year not to
remember for Windows Vista.
Aside from the weak response from the public and software reviewers,
retailers have revolted as well, with Dell bringing XP back in April and
some sellers now packaging XP discs with new Vista laptops. The running joke
that Vista Service Pack 1 will simply reinstall Windows XP might not be that
far off the mark.
