In Windows Vista Business Edition, when I accidentally click on an empty
CD/DVD ROM drive, Vista automatically kicks open the drawer on the drive and
prompts me to insert a disc. You can click on 'Cancel' to close the dialog
box, but the drawer remains open and the only way to close it is to manually
push the button.
How do I prevent this from happening?
With Windows XP, if you click on an empty CD drive, it either does nothing
(if it's a burner), or it says to put a disc in the drive if it's a standard
drive. It doesn't however, open the drawer.
I turned off "Autoplay" in Vista, but that didn't help. (Which I didn't
expect it would.) I then manually edited the registry and disabled "Autorun"
like you can in XP and rebooted, but it still does this.
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Cdrom | AutoRun=0)
This has the potential for causing hardware damage with computers mounted in
sealed kiosk style cases. Not to mention if you're remotely controlling a
computer out in the field at a remote location with no local user and
accidentally click on that drive, the drawer will stay open until someone
manages to drive halfway across the state to push the button to close it.
(Plus, it's just plain annoying that it does this.)

you have to double click it for that to happen and that's easy to avoid
doing. i think its a nice feature but i'm sure there's maybe a registry
setting that will disable that feature. i don't know what it is. i would
just avoid double clicking on it.

one click and the dam thing is open waiteing for someone to bump into it or
drop something on it and get brokeen. VERRY POOR FEATURE.
I have installed Vista 4 different times now and that poor feature never
changes.

Jeff, that may be how it works on your pc, which confuses me somewhat now,
but that's not how it is working on our test pc's at work. There are
multiple computers doing the same thing. A single click on the drive letter
opens the drawer and it is a problem. It's possible we have something on our
end setup wrong, but at this time I have no idea what that could be.
Even if it were with a double click, I find this feature not useful and I am
hopeful someone here knows how to disable this. I'm rather frustrated with
Vista at this point due to various reasons, but this one is just plain silly
that there isn't an obvious way to disable this behavior.
I wished it were as simple as "don't do that", but with the potential for
8,000+ computers running Vista someday, it's going to happen, and happen
frequently. And it's just a matter of time when someone trashes their DVD
drive because the door opened unexpetantly and got jammed. I sometimes
mistakenly click on the empty CD drive letter while browsing folders, whether
it be due to fumble fingers, jerky mouse movement, etc., and I know most
other folks also mistakenly click on the wrong folder. And since tax payers
foot the bill for all the equipment we use, it would be nice to avoid
uneccesary problems like this.
I guess we can reasonably disagree on it being a useful feature, but for us,
having the drawer open like this is not acceptable behavior on some computers
we have so I hope someone can help out with this.

I can't eaven copy and paste a file to them without them opening and telling
me to please insert a disk.I have always had this problem.
If I don't insert a blank disk I can't paste or stage files for burning.
Very poor setup to my notion.

Doesn't anyone have any insite on this problem some of us are having ?
1. Why does my dvd drive open on single click ?
2. Why does my drive burn each file to cd as soon as I paste it to that
drive , Isn't it supposed to store them untill I tell it to burn ?
3. Why does my DVD drive open and tell me to insert a disk when I single
click on it ?
