I just got Vista and my problem is that I have a Control Panel icon on
taskbar beside other desktop icons but there is no Control Panel icon on
desktop itself. I tried to delete the icon but after I delete it, it comes
back again. I used Personalize>Change Desktop Icons and checked/unchecked
Control Panel and it only affects the desktop itself not the taskbar. Any
idea how to get rid of this icon?

What happens if you Right Click / Delete the shortcut to Control Panel on
the Desktop Toolbar?

It comes back again but moves to end of icons.

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
It gets more wierd!!! When I resize the separator so that all icons are shown
on task bar it doesn't come back anymore (after I delete it) but if the
separator is in a way that some of icons are grouped in a menu (above >>
button) after deleting it, it comes back as the last item on the menu and it
has a submenu containing the control panel items. WoW!!!

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
Joker
Hmmm, yes it does. I have also noticed that all of the other system icons
like Computer, Recycle Bin, Network, etc, display the same behavior. This
could be 'by design' or it could be a bug.
Someone else here may have more information on this or I will try to find a
solution.

Now that is really strange? This can't be by design. I'm going to check some
other resources and see if this is a know issue.

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
Joker
I did some research on this desktop toolbar behavior and found that this is
exactly the way this toolbar behaved in XP.
So it looks like it is 'by design', since it was not changed when Vista was
released.

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
But I never had such a problem with XP since the icons on desktop and toolbar
were always the same. The point is Control Panel is not actually on desktop
just on the toolbar! Have you ever seen such a case in XP?

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
Joker
Yes, in fact I just tested this on an installation of XP Pro on a Dell
system that I have running. Same exact behavior that we are seeing in Vista.
I have made some queries and will report any results in this thread.
However, I'm not real hopeful that there will be a fix or workaround.

Re: Cant delete Control Panel Desktop Icon on Taskbar
Well, thanks a lot for your efforts anyway. Seems that we need to ignore
details to to be able to enjoy the big picture... or whatever!
