Default Cannot add to Favorites conundrum....

When I upgraded to Vista, I chose a clean upgrade and manually moved my
data over from the preceding installation of XP Pro. This worked fine
for everything BUT my favorites.

The old Favorites folders and links were copied into the new Favorites
folder just fine. They were/are fully accessible as well. The problem
is in managing them; I cannot add new folders or links below any of the
old ones. Whenever I try, I am told "Access Denied". This only occurs
when attempting to add a favorite to one of the OLD folders I copied
over; creating new folders/adding new favorites under the Favorites root
work fine.

Permissions issue, right? Well....

1) I've taken ownership of the FAVORITES folder -- no change.
2) I've taken ownership of the individual folder (i.e., the old folder)
-- no change.
3) I've given full control to the users group, individual account, etc
-- no change.
4) I've reset the READ-ONLY attribute on the FAVORITES folder and
applied it to all others -- no change.
5) I've reset the READ-ONLY attribute on the individual folders/files --
no change.

In each case, changes were applied to all subcontainers/files as well.

I'm kinda scratchin' my head on this 'un; the solution usually isn't
quite so convoluted.

Suggestions?

Wow, now that is new ...

What type of account are you using? I take it administrator? Have you added
your account to the security group? Properties of the old folders - untick
read only? Sometimes this changes if copied from CD. Maybe just cut them out
to a temp folder and recreate folders then copy the links back in (I know
it's a pain in the butt but ... at least it gets it fixed).

Anyway, hope that helps.

My bad, missed the read-only reference below. Skip that step ...

FWIW, I *DID* go through other cases of the same thing in the
newsgroup's archives; none of the solutions there applied/worked.

I'm using my user account, it's a part of the administrator group.
Read-Only was unticked, the files were NOT copied from CD. The issue
persists.

Upon further research, this may have to do with the whole "Integrity"
property attached to the file system in Vista. I thought it more likely
to be an issue with accounts (i.e., the accounts associated with the old
permissions copied over and weren't updated) but that should have been
fixed when I took ownership.

I copied all of the files out to another folder and once again started
changing the permissions, taking ownership, and so forth. Then I copied
them all back and now it appears to be letting me save to the old
folders. Best I can figure is that by moving to a different folder,
getting them out of the "special" folder of Favorites, the various
permissions changes took hold properly. This flat did NOT work when I
did it on the folder/subfolders/files in Favorites; it APPEARED to work
but something was still messed up. Evidently this is a known issue and
has already been entered in a bug DB at Microsoft. Go figure.

I've only had time to test a couple instances to determine if this fixed
worked, but if it didn't the next step will be to export all favorites
to a bookmark.htm file, delete all favorites and lastly, import the
bookmark.htm file back in. The last tech note I found suggests this
will actually do the trick so....

Nice work. Interesting outcome. Maybe the favorites folders don't work quite
the same way as normal folders. Will have to store that away just incase I
come across it again. Sorry for running through the usual questions (I
misread a part of your post ... well, didn't read it properly).
