Can start program from the desktop, but not from the start menu
Hi,
I have a game installed on Windows Vista Ultimate. I am able to start it
from an icon on the desktop, but not from the start menu or quick launch
toolbar. I have checked the properties for all three shortcuts and they
are similar. I have even dragged it from the start menu to the desktop
to make sure they are similar, but I am still only able to start the
game from the desktop. When I try from the start menu or quick launch I
get a cryptic (non English) error message.
Why would it matter where I start the program from when the properties
for the shortcut is exactly the same? I never had anything like this
happen on XP.

Press ctrl-c and paste in the 'cryptic (non-English) error message'
Re: Can start program from the desktop, but not from the start menu
Your start menu shortcuts are an amalgam of more than one address -
something like:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\Users\Doug\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\St art Menu\Programs
and I am wondering whether in one of these they have different permissions
than you have (as User) on your desktop? And can you right click on the
Start Menu shortcuts and run them "As Administrator"? Sorry, not very
helpful but it may suggest something.
