It's a very long story but in short I have one Raid 1 disk (I had to
delete the other one) but it is showing up as failed rather than
degraded. The original Raid was built with ICH8R and I'm now running
with ICH9R.
Is there any way of retrieving the information from a failed Raid 1
disk? (the disk itself is working ok)

Try each drive one at a time and see if one had perhaps partially shorted
and prevented the other from working...
Not likely both drives would have failed at once unless there was a power
surge
I have three 320GB disks, One is showing up as a raid disk with a
failed rRaid 0 (Which I know I have to live with) and a failed Raid 1
(which I hope I can recover somehow)
One of the other disks contains an 80GB backup which I'm happy to
sacrifice if I can recover the info on the Raid disk.
The other disk contains Vista and restored information from the
backup.
Do I have to make one of the disks a Raid disk first? If so, how do I
do that?

I was rebuilding my pc and constantly getting a blue screen so I
sacrificed one disk and loaded Vista onto it. That left me with one
'goo'disk and now I'm trying to re-build from that one.

I think I'd take the advice someone else suggested and skip the RAID
altogether.
Just backup your data as often as needed to DVD's.
I'm just trying to recreate the raid array from my one good disk so that
I can get my data & programmes back. Then I'll copy the data over to
another disk and forget about the whole Raid thing.

You can get the data from the good disk.
there would be no need to re-create the array
